Coalitions Poised For Another Exciting Year
Macomb County Prevention Coalition Releases Survey
Data
This marks the 7th year for the Macomb Prevention Coalition.
The Coalition, in conjunction with the Macomb Intermediate
School District, recently released its latest statistics
on substance abuse. Across the board, new school surveys
show a significant drop in the use of "gateway"
drugs among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. The report also
documents significant reductions in alcohol and tobacco
use among teens, especially among 8th graders. For more
information, please visit http://www.misd.net/inthenews.html.
Utica Community Action Team
The Utica area Community Action Team (UCAT) serves the
students of Utica Community Schools and the communities
where they live. UCAT has had a very busy and exciting
past few months with their sites focused on anti-tobacco
efforts as they announced the winners of their anti-smoking
poster contests. Over 391 original artwork poster entries
from Utica Community Schools students of all ages were
received at the end of last school year. UCAT members
chose several winners for two different contests. The
first contest winner, an eighth-grader from Shelby Junior
High School, will have his artwork adapted to an 8'x19'
portable billboard display that will travel to various
school and community events. The second winner, a Morgan
Elementary sixth-grader, will have her artwork transformed
into an on-screen ad to be displayed during the preview
period at 12 local movie theaters for the next six months.
Each of the winners received modest monetary awards. For
further information contact: Kim Wiegand, President UCAT,

Warren Coalition for a Healthy Community
The Warren Coalition for a Healthy Community (WCHC) is
continuing its mission to improve the quality of life
in Warren and its work on a comprehensive public-awareness
campaign that discourages substance abuse. The anti-substance
abuse campaign is designed to involve local students in
the development and promotion of the public service announcements.
The WCHC had a terrific turnout of students from local
SADD groups that helped distribute ribbons, candy and
specially-printed balloons advertising the Coalition at
the Warren Thanksgiving parade. The young parade spectators
particularly appreciated the treats and over 1000 balloons
were distributed. For more information, contact Helen
