Anti-drug coalition launches Web site
By Frank DeFrank, Macomb Daily Staff Writer
The Macomb County Prevention Coalition was formed in 1994
to serve as an "umbrella" for several county
education, law enforcement and community organizations
dedicated to the same goal: to promote the prevention
of drug abuse among children and teens. The Web site,
funded through a grant from the Office of National Drug
Control Policy, is another attempt to achieve that goal.
A cynic might say another effort to prevent substance
abuse among teens won't make much difference.
Don't count Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga among
them.
"Everything works a little bit," the prosecutor
said Oct. 10 at the unveiling of the Macomb County Prevention
Coalition Website.
"It's hard to measure what one component will do
when combined with something else. The more messages you
get out (to kids) ... something that didn't make sense
two days ago ... suddenly flips a switch.
"In a world in which everything works, this is a
tool that unites everything."

The site offers information about the coalition, including
its history, goals, members and calendar of relevant events.
It also provides numerous links for adults and children
to learn about drug abuse prevention.
Available information is supplied by local and national
organizations. Parents will even find a link to the popular
"Parents: The Anti-Drug" national media campaign.
Ken Lampar, co-chairman of the coalition, said parents
will find the Web site especially useful in helping them
talk to their children about drug abuse prevention.
"I think what parents most look for is good, accurate
information," he said. "They're not sure what
to tell their kids, or how to tell their kids."
Utica Community Schools hosted the program at the Joan
C. Sergent Instructional Resource Center in Sterling Heights.
Sergent, superintendent of Utica Community Schools, praised
the coalition for its work because, she said, keeping
children from abusing drugs requires the effort of many.
"This is a community issue," Sergent said. "Utica
Community Schools has 28,500 students, and we're concerned
about the future of these children. We're concerned about
them making healthy choices."
