New law punishes adults who let teens drink alcohol
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Parents and other adults who
let teens drink face fines and jail time under a new state
law.
Until now, police have had to prove that adults bought
alcohol for people under 21. The new law lets them prosecute
adults who allow underage drinking in their homes even
if they don't supply the alcohol.
Governor Carcieri recently signed the new law. Under it,
a first offense carries a 350 to one thousand dollar fine
and up to six months in jail.
Fifteen other states have laws punishing adults who permit
underage drinking in their homes. Another 17 states punish
adults who provide minors with alcohol.
The Rhode Island law has exemptions for parents who let
their own children drink and for religious ceremonies.
